Jazz and The Blues are about a lot of things, including struggle, culture, bias, inclusion, change, and resilience. Each of those concepts are critical to understanding and combating bias in the practice of law. In this program we review examples from the world of Jazz and The Blues to explore this topic. But the program is not about jazz and blues and music. It’s about eliminating bias and promoting inclusion in the practice of law. The music is only used as a vehicle to present the concepts that we’ll explore. As a result, these materials are not going to rehash the actual program. Rather, these materials elaborate upon the critical underlying concepts — understanding issues of diversity and inclusion and implementing them both in the practice. Diversity and inclusion, like everything else that matters, is about the MPH approach. It’s about having the right “Mindset”, utilizing the proper “Process” and then combining those two so that you develop the best long term “Habits” which ensure your success.

MINDSET In order to be able to execute in the inclusion and bias space, lawyers must have the proper mindset. There are several philosophical concepts that are helpful to understand in that regard. Interestingly, each of the concepts I’d like to discuss here are derived from some of the writings of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
