8:30 a.m. Representing Traumatized People: The Importance of Understanding Trauma in our Clients and Cases
Professor O’Brien will discuss common ways in which clients encounter trauma in their lives, and how their trauma experiences affect the lawyer’s ethical responsibilities of diligence and client communication.
9:30 a.m. Recognizing Symptoms of Trauma
A rich understanding of the complexities of psychological trauma is crucial for the development and presentation of cases involving exposure to traumatic events. Dr. Wayland will discuss some of the tell-tale signs and symptoms of trauma exposure, and how they affect a client’s ability to function.
10:30 a.m. Break
10:45 a.m. Trauma-Informed Interviewing
Dr. Wayland will moderate as Investigator Quinn O’Brien interviews Katie Kalahurka Burnett. Ms. O’Brien will demonstrate both good and bad practices, and Ms. Burnett will exemplify the effects of good interviewing skills and problematic ones. Attendees will learn to gather information more effectively from clients and witnesses who have experienced trauma.

Movie: The Exonerated (2005)
A stunning expose of the American Criminal Justice System gone horribly wrong. Exonerated tells the true stories of six people who were convicted of crimes they did not commit and were sentenced to death. This highly compelling feature is derived from real interviews, letters, transcriptions and public records to tell the story of the lives that were destroyed despite evidence that could have freed them.

Panel Discussion: The Trauma of Wrongful Convictions
Miracle of Innocence cofounders Darryl A. Burton and Lamonte McIntyre, and fellow exoneree Joseph Amrine, among them served 75 years of wrongful imprisonment for crimes they did not commit. Quinn & Sean O’Brien have decades of experience representing people in prison and investigating their cases. Dr. Wayland will help them discuss the special needs of people who have struggled against carceral systems.
