Learning the Law and its Limits

in Missouri's Freedom Suits

Available In-Person or Webcast

In the decades after Missouri's admission to the Union as a slave state, hundreds of enslaved people sued for their freedom in the state’s courts, especially in the St. Louis circuit court. In order to do so, they amassed extensive knowledge about statute, precedent, and legal practice. This talk explores the legal savvy of freedom suit plaintiffs—and their ability to use the law to their advantage.
